Psalm 91

God offers protection for His people but how do we get access to that protection?

I think the answer lies in Psalm 91. You can't talk about Gods protection without mentioning this psalm. It's a psalm many people pray in times of war.

Some say this psalm was written by Moses, others say David. Whoever is right, they both certainly needed and experienced God’s protection during their lifetime and so they know what they are talking about.

Psalm 91:says;
1  He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2  I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust."
3  Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence.
4  He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5  You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6  Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7  A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.
8  Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked.
9  Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10  No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11  For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.
12  In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13  You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14  "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15  He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.
16  With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation."

  1. Psalm 91 says we have to be dwelling in His secret place. That means living where God is, in His presence, inhabiting with Him all the time like a young child lives with his parents, under their protection, under their provision, under their teaching.  Not like an older child who has left home and just comes around once a week or once a month or whenever they need something.
  2. If you want the protection of a refuge or a fortress you actually have to be inside it not outside. Outside there is no protection at all, you are at the hands of your enemy. You have to be in the fortress, or in the refuge.
  3. His feathers are actually attached to Him so to be covered with His feathers means you have to be very close, so close you can feel His pulse.
  4. If you are under His wings then again you have to be very close to Him. Literally under His wings or umbrella as many Christians put it today.  You have a certain amount of freedom but don’t run away.His wings are part of Him, they are attached to His body..
  5. When you are under the shadow of the almighty again, you are very close to Him. So close He is protecting you from the burning rays of the sun. But you have to keep up with Him, otherwise His shadow will pass over you and you will be exposed.
  6. Verse 14 says We set our love upon Him. He is the object and focus of our love, of our life, of everything we do.

As the greatest commandment says, we are to love Him with ALL our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength.

  1. Finally, If we want Him to be with us as He said in verse 15, then we have to also be with Walking with Him, Talking to Him, listening to Him, supporting Him, obeying Him.

As Psalm 23 says,   Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

But we also have to go with Him.

And when you dwell In Him, with Him, close to Him, when we love Him, when we obey Him, and when we trust only in Him;

  • Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence.
  • You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
  • Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
  • A thousand will fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.
  • No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
  • His angels will bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
  • You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
  • He will deliver you and honour you.
  • And with long life He will satisfy you, And He will show you His salvation."

The fortress is ready. The refuge is waiting for us to enter in. It's up to us.

As Paul says

Romans 8:35-39 (NKJV)
  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
 As it is written: "For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter."
 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,  nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

No matter what happens.

  • Dwell in His secret place, be inside His fortress
  • Keep your armour on at all times
  • Obey God, Maintain your faith
  • Stay close to God.
  • Trust Him. He will not let you down.

God is love and love never fails………………………..Amen
